Professional licensure
The School of Accountancy’s top-ranked programs are an efficient means for satisfying many of the educational requirements for the following professional certifications. Please keep in mind that these credentials are optional and are not required to participate in the profession.
Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA)
The CGMA designation distinguishes professionals who have advanced proficiency in finance, operations, strategy, and management, helping organizations connect all aspects of the business. The requirements for obtaining the CGMA certification are completing a bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting, finance, or business, completing the CGMA Finance Leadership Program, and three years’ work experience. The CGMA Finance Leadership Program is open to anyone with a bachelor’s degree or above in accounting, finance or business. The CGMA was established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
Designation as a CMA helps prepare individuals to work inside companies and organizations of all sizes and across all industries, for the purpose of financial planning, budgeting, and other internal decision-making needs. Although there are no formal educational requirements to sit for the CMA exam, the requirements for obtaining the CMA certification are completing a bachelor’s degree or professional accounting certification, two years’ work experience, and successful completion of parts one and two of the CMA exam. The CMA certification is administered by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).
Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
The CPA designation sets the foundation for many careers in accounting and business. CPAs provide various professional services, including tax, audit, and consulting services, and hold various positions in public and corporate accounting, such as controller or chief financial officer (CFO). The requirements for obtaining the CPA designation vary by state. Students interested in becoming a CPA should review the board of accountancy website for their state and contact the board with any questions about eligibility. The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) maintains a board of accountancy directory.
